Mini Confinement after Miscarriage

Miscarriage is a topic that people try to avoid. Being a painful one, people rarely bring the issue up. Unfortunately, this also means that there is a lack of information about whether or not you should have confinement after a miscarriage. 

Well, let us shed some light on this topic today. Miscarriage postpartum depression is not uncommon as the experience can be devastating on the mother. It is both physically and emotionally taxing which can result in miscarriage postpartum depression. 

During pregnancy, a woman’s body undergoes massive changes. Similar to after giving birth, the body requires time to properly rest and heal after a miscarriage. This is why having at least a mini confinement after miscarriage is beneficial to help the mother recuperate. 

Let’s start with the basics. In Mandarin, confinement literally means “sitting the month”. During confinement, mothers stay indoors and are given the proper food and nourishment to heal and recover. 

For cases of miscarriage,confinement is recommended. As the body undergoes strain during pregnancy, confinement after a miscarriage lets the body heal. This makes sure that the body is given sufficient nutrients and rest. 

Nutritious food

While it is up to you to decide if you want to follow a strict confinement diet, the general rule of thumb is to eat food that is nutritious. This means no fast food, no soft drinks, no junk food, no instant noodles and no liquor. 

You should eat food that replenishes your body. During pregnancy, a mother loses significant protein, iron and calcium. Eat foods that are rich in these nutrients to replace whatever it is that was lost. 

While your body is weak, the last thing you want is to suffer from bowel problems. That’s why you should avoid food that is harsh on the stomach. Spicy food, deep-fried food and raw food should be avoided to prevent irritating your stomach. 


The body undergoes similar shock and strain during a miscarriage. Mothers should try to avoid strenuous activities and heavy exercise. Putting a physical strain on your body during this period may cause a prolonged recovery period. However, the occasional stroll can let your body and muscles stretch every now and then. 


While many traditionalists stress that mothers in confinement should not shower and wash their hairs, it is actually alright to do so. As long as you shower only in warm water and dry your hair thoroughly afterward, it’s fine. 

That being said, your body is still weak. You should not expose it to extreme temperature changes. Avoid sleeping directly under an air-conditioner and avoid going out under the hot sun.  You can easily fall ill as rapid temperature changes could shock the body.

Mental health

This is arguably the most important part. Miscarriage can be emotionally devastating to the mother. Miscarriage postpartum depression is common, especially among new mothers. 

During this trying period, it is important to have companionship from your loved ones. It is okay to feel down, don’t feel bad as there are things that are simply out of your control. However, do not let it be a burden that weighs you down and prevent you from moving forward.
